The Art (Act 1). Artium Collection

From: Wednesday, 26 April 2017

To: Sunday, 26 August 2018

Place: Sala Sur

These works, among those belonging to Artium Collection, have participated most times in constructing the discourse on the art, culture and society

Notice: this exhibition, The Art, is the first act of the project The Art and de System (of Art). Act 2, The System (of Art) finished in 2017 october 1. In 2018 march 2 Act 3 will open with a selection of young artists and recent works.

The Art exhibition brings together 44 pieces from the Artium Collection that have been selected through a collective judgment, which is that of the many discourses that have been built in the contemporary art of this country ever since Artium was opened. It was therefore a simple process: the number of times these works have been lent out for exhibitions or have participated in the Museum’s own exhibitions were counted. One might well more or less correctly ask if we are dealing with the most significant works in the Collection. But among those belonging to our heritage, what is indeed certain is that these works have participated most times in constructing the discourse on Contemporaneity, on the art, culture and society in which we live today.

The exhibition has taken great care in the layout of the works, thereby facilitating that the proposed aesthetic experience can occur with the greatest guarantees in terms of the public encountering each work. For this reason, the layout has avoided any historical discourse and has attempted to facilitate the links that the can be found –communicated– between the works and the public. Three spaces have therefore been proposed: People/Individuals/Subjects, addressing personal reflections on the construction of the subject; Situations/Contexts/Scenarios, exploring the context in which we politically, economically and socially develop; and finally, Things/Objects/Devices, which in a twist of language reviews the mechanisms for analysing this reality, discursive media and the very language of art.

Alongside the presence of these 44 key works from the Artium Collection in Alava, The Art exhibition also includes a text, an initial approach to interpret each of these works. And I emphasise an initial because each work contains the many varied experiences with which each of us brings when we move up close to view them. These texts have been written with the participation of 44 of the main critics and historians in the world of Spanish art, among which also includes artists, poets, educators or writers, aiming to obtain an initial impression, a reflection that serves as a stimulus to experience each of these works.

There are many ways to approach a work of art, currents of interpretation and methodologies, etc., but what is being proposed here is neither a scientific nor a historical approach.

The cutting-edge of contemporary art seeks an active viewer, an accomplice in interpretation, someone who can become part –and many times a decisive part– of the process by which an artist decides that a work is finished. Works are formed as cultural artefacts framed within a tangle of relations between the pieces themselves and the artists, buyers, public, critics and cultural industries. And today more than ever they represent an invitation to complicity and dialogue. Like Raymond Queneau  in his book Exercises in Style, in which the same story is told in 99 ways, or like the work that Sophie Calle presented at the Venice Biennale in 2007, Take Care of Yourself, in which she invited 107 people to interpret the same text, each work challenges or seduces us from its image, ingenuity or poetry, because of its critical or social content, all of which are aspects that we are used to addressing in our daily lives. The moment is now. Look.
