The artist raises questions linked to one’s own individual identity, in relation to society and power systems

Curator: José Ángel Artetxe

The idea of Juan Carlos Meana (Vitoria-Gasteiz, 1964) in this exhibition is to present an overview of works completed in their vast majority over the past two years. Sculptures, installations of recovered and/or prefabricated elements, paintings on oilcloth, photographs, etc., all objects or interventions arranged in the exhibition space that challenge the spectator’s gaze.

Meana raises questions linked to identity, specifically that of one’s own individual identity, in relation to society and power systems: “Building and questioning symbols of identity is one of the functions of art. How subjects live on in their identity within the social body to which they belong and how the group, with its ideas, particularities and own identity, exerts pressure on and can ultimately nullify individuals.”
