ARTIUM, Basque Centre-Museum of Contemporary Art, presents the exhibition Alava: contemporary artistic scene (Seminar Room, from October 8, 2011 to March 4, 2012), a selection of monographs, reference works, exhibition catalogues, music, films and other kinds of audiovisual material. All of the exhibits come from the collections of the Library and documentation Centre of ARTIUM. Moreover, the exhibition is documented through a visual contents manager that offers a vision of Alava as an artistic scenario over the ages, through bibliography, videos and web resources, among other things.

The province of Alava has been and is a source of inspiration for numerous writers, photographers, musicians and sculptors. Alava: contemporary artistic scene, attempts to journey through the places that have provided the motive, support or scenario for contemporary art in its different manifestations: landscape, urban planning and architecture of the city of Vitoria-Gasteiz and the surrounding area portrayed in artistic works and by their creators. From the comics of Mauro Entrialgo, Jabier Etxagibel and Álvaro Ortega, to the books of Toti Martinez de Lezea, Ken Follet and Patxi Zubizarreta.

Moreover, the exhibition contains a selection of films made in or inspired by Alava and discs with songs by the groups Oskorri, Potato and Barricada, musicians such as Wynton Marsalis or lyricists such as Alfredo Donnay. The exhibition features a number of screens showing scenes from these films, comic strips, photographs or to enable these songs to be heard.

On the other hand, the exhibition is accompanied by illustrations made on the wall of the gallery by the artist Mundina. This involves drawings inspired by several works ranging from a photograph by Alberto Schommer dating from 1951 depicting a priest and a boy in the doorway of the Cathedral of Santa Maria in Vitoria-Gasteiz, to stills from the films -Frágil and La madre muerta, by Juanma Bajo Ulloa; sculptures such as the plaza-monument in honour of the Basque Laws by Eduardo Chillida; and paintings such as Gasolinera, by Carlos Marcote, or Vitoria, by Carmelo Ortiz de Elgea, among others. Mundina has also based his work on the comic Vitoria-Gasteiz: los felices 85 as starting point. This is a catalogue that contains the works of illustrators from Vitoria who have sought inspiration in a number of different areas of the city. From this he has extracted the helicopter that flies over Vitoria-Gasteiz in the short story Tropikala?, by Andoni Gaztelua, and the control tower of Foronda airport from lntriga en Foronda, by Kini.

The exhibition is complete with an extensive documentary database on art in Alava, accessible via the website of ARTIUM's Library. In this, one can find information about the historical context and the development of art in Alava and numerous online resources available to the Documentation Centre of ARTIUM. The website also contains a database on artists based in Alava, including illustrators, painters, singers, writers, film directors and sculptors.

The website also presents a selection of images using different disciplines such as illustration and video installations, photographs, sculptures and even video clips recorded in Alava such as Txus by La polla records, Anek idatzi dit zutaz, by Mikel Urdangarin and One Love/ One Shot by Kodigo Norte. One can also find songs that deal with the province and which can be obtained at the Library and Documentation Centre of ARTIUM.

On the other hand, the Documentation Centre of ARTIUM encourages users to add to the database by sending their proposals to biblioteca@artium.org. The aim is to complete the list of songs, video clips, films that have been made in Alava, performances, photographs or sculptures to be found in the province. The only requirement: the source of inspiration for creating the suggested works must be Alava.
